Marin Community FoundationMarin Community Foundation
The Marin Community Foundation was founded to make a difference in the lives of others through thoughtful, effective philanthropy. Their mission is to encourage and apply philanthropic contributions to help improve the human condition, embrace diversity, promote a human and democratic society, and enhance the community's quality of life, now and for future generations.
Marin Community Foundation (MCF) makes grants and loans to support community issues in Marin County and, through the generosity of donors, throughout the world. MCF also encourages individuals, families, and businesses to partner with them to fulfill their financial and charitable goals. MCF educates the community on pressing needs and the organizations addressing them. Lastly, MCF convenes people to work on community problems, and encourages greater community involvement.
MCF was established in 1986 with the assets of a trust from long time Marin County residents, Leonard and Beryl H. Buck. Over 350 individuals, families, businesses, and community groups have established funds at MCF. Grants made from these funds support a wide range of issues within Marin County, elsewhere in the U.S., and around the world. MCF is one of the largest community foundations in the United States. It manages approximately $1 billion in assets and distributes about $50 million annually in grants.
Marin CharitableMarin Charitable Foundation
Marin Charitable is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization celebrating its 50th year. Marin Charitable raises monies in order to provide grants to nonprofit organizations with programs serving school aged children within Marin County. Marin Charitable is a registered 501(c)3 charity.
Established in 1961 by a group of Marin General Hospital volunteers, it was originally a fundraising effort supporting the Cardiac Care Unit, but soon changed focus in order to help Marin County children and teens. In 1964, the Marin Charitable Foundation became incorporated as an independent, nonprofit entity. In 1977, the organization changed its name to Marin Charitable Association, and later (2010) shortened to Marin Charitable. Marin Charitable expanded its membership in 2008 by establishing a junior level of the organization for women who want to give back to the community, but who may have less time due to family and career commitments.
At the time of inception, community need was primarily in the areas of health and education. Today they have broadened our mission to include a range of programs that provide critical support, education and enrichment for school aged children with limited opportunities. Marin Charitable's role is now more vital than ever in helping kids achieve their full potential into adulthood.
Marin Charitable plans and hosts at least three major fundraising events each year. Additional funds are raised from the business community and contributions from individuals and foundations. 100% of the proceeds raised is donated to worthwhile nonprofit programs in Marin; Members make a commitment of their time. Whether it is making an in-person visit to an organization applying for grants or helping by volunteering with one of our grantee organizations, members are willing to roll up their sleeves to help ensure that all children in Marin County have access to opportunities.
